Davis: More dollars is not true education reform

[I couldn't have said it better myself... JAE] State Representative Brett Davis (R-Oregon) released the following statement today regarding an announcement by WI Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Superintendent Tony Evers that the Department will be open to discussing changes to the state’s school funding system prior to the agency’s budget request.
I am encouraged that Superintendent Evers is willing to take a step back and re-think how schools in Wisconsin are funded. As ranking Republican and former Chairman of the Assembly Education Committee, I look forward to being part of the solution on school finance reform.

It is crucial, however, that we operate under the principle that simply spending more tax dollars does not lead to student achievement. Instead, like every small business and family in Wisconsin, school boards across Wisconsin should be provided the tools they need to control costs by reinstating the Qualified Economic Offer (QEO) and align it with revenue caps, allowing local economic conditions to be factored into arbitration decisions, and eliminating burdensome state mandates.

This reform will ensure we create a sustainable school finance system and protect hard working property tax payers that are struggling to pay their bills.
Brett Davis is a Republican and represents the residents of the 80th Assembly District (Monroe).

    COMMENTS

I agree with Davis and he will have my vote in the fall elections. This is a "shell game" by the DPI, but I do applaud them for bringing this huge issue up for discussion. Education funding is 50% of our state's budget. A lot of money is at risk.
