The federal government is my beloved neighbor
This raises to the level of REALLY bugging me - some card-carrying liberal says something like
Whether its the Gulf oil disaster, or a tornado in Eagle, the people still need that big Federal government.
On cue, Governor Doyle emerges post-tragedy and starts giving stuff away.
Doyle declared an emergency for Waukesha County on Tuesday. State and local officials are still assessing the damage and preparing to send the information to the federal government, which has a minimum threshold before a disaster declaration is made.
A federal disaster declaration will allow governments to recover costs of response services and could assist residents who have no insurance and businesses.
So that means we need the federal government? How about these tidbits from the Journal Sentinal story Jim links to?
As if on cue, two dozen 10- and 11-year-olds marched up to Eagle Village Hall on Wednesday morning, just in time to be greeted by Gov. Jim Doyle, who had stopped by to visit Red Cross volunteers staffing the emergency services center there.
The kids, participants in an "Acts of Kindness" themed day camp at the River Glen Christian Church in Genesee, were bringing bags of apples and a couple hundred sandwiches they'd made for residents still reeling from the devastation left behind by Monday's tornado through the village and surrounding town.
…. The damaged neighborhood was abuzz Wednesday with property owners and volunteers who were sawing up damaged or downed trees, sorting through wind-scattered items strewn over lawns….
And imagine. Insurance companies performing as they’re supposed to.
Doyle said that in talking with residents at the scene, everyone he had asked said their private insurance companies were responding well.
The Red Cross. Kids from a nearby church camp. And oh my, neighbors, volunteers, friends.
Yes. Government best forms and maintains our system of laws and justice, regulates commerce to allow for the effective functioning of free markets and most importantly, secures liberty for all Americans. But don’t tell me that our forefathers (and as recently as our parents and grandparents for gosh sakes) didn’t have a better way to help our communities, our neighbors, our loved ones than calling in the damn federal government.

COMMENTS
Government has come to represent free money. Who doesn’t want some of that? In situations like this, Daddy Warbucks becomes Daddy Disasterbucks. Income redistribution in the guise of government philanthropy. Good thing we have government to enforce charitability. We are through the looking glass, Alice.

... "Insurance companies performing as they’re supposed to."
Well of course - the governor is there and that means the cameras are there ... no self-respecting (not wanting their sales image to be tarnished) insurance company is going to be the bad guy when it means 'word will get out' that they're sleazy.
Kinda wish the governor would have visited the valley after our hail storm some 15 years ago ... maybe my insurance company would have had to do the right thing rather than throwing a check at me for 20% of the cost of damage and daring me to sue them for the rest (Knowing full well I didn't have the resources to fight them in court).
At the same time I "get" the point of the story and agree that the Feds aren't the answer. WE are. Just don't tell the government to get out of the way because Insurance Companies have our back... they're in the business of collecting money and paying a small portion of it out for sales commissions and investor dividends ... not for claims.

Jeff- Government SHOULD be in the business of enforcing contracts. I have had numerous claims with several insurance companies, and just like anything else, there are good and bad. My experience lately is that insurance companies tend to slightly overpay to avoid the legal hassles that could encumber them and cost them more in the long run. I was recently paid, by my estimate, about $1500 more than a vehicle was worth in a non-injury accident, for example.
Last comment- both the "education" our kids receive, and the fact that government does so many things it ought not do, and ultimately can not afford, adds greatly to our debt and adds cost to everything because of the taxes needed to support all these activities. AND undermines private efforts by creating the mindset that government will do it.

Ken Van Doren (Fri Jun 25 12:30:06 2010)
Of course, with educated people like Peggy West in local elected offices, the Federal Government might just have something of a valid argument for the total ineptitude of local government...
