‘Vegas’ McCormick pulls in $53,000 from Nevada
What’s with this? The Terri McCormick for Congress campaign (the 8th CD) posted total contributions for the 2nd quarter of 2010 of $111,001, significantly improving on earlier donations totaling only $24,425. Over $98,000 of those Q2 contributions (88.4%) were from out-of-state contributors –
- 4 from apparently one family in California
- 1 from Florida
- 2 from a couple in Idaho
- 1 from McCormick’s Treasurer in Minnesota
- 2 from a couple in New Mexico
- 23 contributions from Nevada
- 4 from New York
- 2 from Ohio
- 4 from 2 families in Texas
- And 1 contribution from the great state of Utah
Those 23 contributions from Nevada, totaling $53,764, anted up almost 50% of the total raised for the quarter and 40% of the total McCormick has raised for the entire campaign ($135,426). It’s weird. All except one of the Nevada contributions (as essentially all other out-of-state contributions listed in the report) were the max $2,400; most – 14 – listed their employer as “self.” One of those self-employed donors listed his occupation as “professional poker player." An interesting group…. Five of the 23 list their home address as Henderson, Nevada – a gambling mecca of its own. One lists North Las Vegas and the rest of these big rollers (17) list their home base as Las Vegas.
The Vegas connection? It’s People V. US,
an organization set up by Attorneys, Political Consultants, and Marketing professionals. We have seen from the inside the destructive goals of those who lead this country. We are ready to put our jobs on the line, to defend our Country through court proceedings. The Constitution of the United States is our authority, and we will work diligently to remove from office ANYONE regardless of party that attempts any legislation in violation of the Constitution.
People V. US was characterized by one blogger as Shakespearean – “full of sound and fury, signifying northing…”
Yeah, nothing. Apparently something approaching $100,000 in contributions – almost three-fourths of all McCormick has raised thus far.
Here’s the McCormick press release, penned June 19 by Tracie Pistocco, “media relations director for The People V. US” and also, as was her husband, one of those $2,400 contributors to McCormick’s campaign.
Looks like McCormick hit a vein of ore in Nevada and environs. Does it go any deeper? Would it go any deeper if People V. US asked around about why McCormick isn’t raising significant local dollars?

P.S: If you’d like a copy of my primitive spreadsheet recording McCormick’s contributors listed in her Q2 report, let me know.
COMMENTS
The argument goes that "since a congressman's votes affect even out-of-state people, those people should be able to bribe the politicians without interference."
When are we going to learn? Give her challengers the option to forgo bribes (with public funding of campaigns) and see how long she stays in the race.

I'm not exactly sure why some type of financing attack is being launched against this candidate. Is it because she's not part of the Wisconsin GOP "good ol' boys" club? Not sure, just asking, that's what it appears to be.
When you listen to the principles driving her campaign (at least from what I've heard) there isn't a whole lot to be upset about? If there's a problem with her platform - maybe we should be looking at that and putting that at the forefront of the discussion. When others have a lock on the traditional 'financing spigot', you can't blame a candidate for being resourceful and finding like-minded individuals wherever they can. Were campaign laws broken? If so, that's another discussion - if not, again - why are we having this conversation?
As far as ideas go, I sure can't complain about raw conservatism, free markets, and a return to the Constitution. Admittedly, I have no horse in this race ... it's not my district and I'm not endorsing Terri McCormick ... but I AM quite curious as an observer.

So I shouldn't be concerned with Ribble taking most of his contributions from out of state contractors? (Gee, no chance for 'stimulus' earmark abuse there from the lobbyist.)
Why the insinuation about Vegas? Why the pietist streak? Frankly even if those Nevada donations were ALL from professional gamblers, not only am I surprised anyone there still has some money left after their fed-induced housing bust, but they've made their living by sharply evaluating what other people *say* versus what they *do.* And they like McCormick enough to part with some of their bankroll.
An even handed approach to reporting Congressional fundraising is acknowledging that in swing seats like the 8th CD, money comes from all over the country. A stronger analysis would evaluate whether the contributors want business as usual (Roth), stimulus handouts (Ribble), or freedom (McCormick.) I'll take freedom.

Terri is a moderate Republican and not wacko enough for some...

Thanks Jo. You give me reason to read. I signed Mr. Roths nomination papers. But my vote is in the air.

Guido.
Roger Roth has collected $20,000 more than McCormick (Roth - $177,879, McCormick $157,263). 95% of his contributors are from Wisconsin and 77% live within the district.
Roger will be representing the intrests of the district and his constituents.
That's grassroots.

So what's your point ? Getting contributions out of individuals in Wisconsin is a tough nut to crack, especially when a primary( or no coupon) is involved. As all campaigns revolve around money, I laud McCormick for being able to raise funds she has thus far.

Guido (Tue Jul 20 11:06:16 2010)
I guess I didn't read the same report you did because I don't believe that a majority of RR's money came from out of state. I believe that most of it came from small donors. I'll have to check your references. Terri is certainly not one of the "good old boys"; she has alienated a lot of people in the local party. I know that Roger is a "hometown" boy, has the support of some of the monied people in town and a heck of a nice guy. I applaud his military service, but I don't believe he made much of an impact when he was in Madison. What we need in a candidate is someone who can unseat Kagen. That is the bottom line and I don't think that Roger or Terri can.

Jo:
If you are going to be fair about this you should report all the candidates sources with the same detail that you seem to pursue anytime the name of Terri McCormick comes up. You go out of your way to post negative articles from different blogs and news releases. Could it have anything to do with the fact that you are actively promoting Reid Ribble on your website?
If Terri McCormick is getting funds from outside the state, so be it. If done legally, and I don't believe you have stated she has done anything illegal, what is your point except that it sounds like sour grapes?
If her numbers had not come in so positive, you would have been reporting that.
I think your comments are vailed attempts to discredit one candidate because you support a different candidate. I would expect a higher ground from you than that.
Mike
