Marc Savard, classy guy, leaving campaign trail
Even though sometimes he didn’t get his pronouns just right, I really like this tea partying painter and farmer from Door County. As I said back in February, this guy has heart.
He was in it until the end. And well, this is the end. It’s the end of his campaign, but not a good-bye to this classy, simple man-of-the-earth.
To my friends and supporters,
It is with a heavy heart that I must announce officially Monday morning that I will be leaving the campaign trail. I have been so honored to have had the opportunity to know all of you and to have had the chance to talk about the issues that are so important to our great country’s future. Unfortunately I was unable to sustain the campaign with a reasonable chance of success over the last few weeks with the lack of resources we were experiencing.
I am undeterred however that our country needs good folks to get to Washington and make the necessary changes of direction that are absolutely needed over the coming years. I have had the pleasure of getting to know Reid Ribble, one of my fellow candidates in the race, over the last year, and I wholeheartedly endorse his efforts to continue the fight for our country’s future. I urge you to introduce yourselves to him through his website, his Facebook page, and attending gatherings I will be hosting for him in the near future.
Reid has what it takes to get the job done.
I will be actively working for Reid over the next several weeks till the primary on September 14. Our country demands our attention and devotion.
Thank you for all you did to help the campaign.
Respectfully, Marc
Jo Egelhoff, FoxPolitics.net
COMMENTS
Jo...I noticed that you didn't rush out and write a blog when another classy guy, Marc Trager dropped out and endorsed Roger Roth. Go figure.
I am somewhat confused though. Marc was the guy who said he would not take PAC money, endorsed the candidate with the most PAC money? The guy who said special interest should stay out of government supports the guy with the most special intrest money?
Like I say...I'm confused.

Dale (Mon Aug 02 09:40:03 2010)
Tell us all about the Reid PAC money, Dale. Got some links?

Also note that only 40% (89 of his 218 contributors) are from Wisconsin and only 33% (72 of 218) are from the district.

Dale (Mon Aug 02 12:52:02 2010)
Dale, I admire the character and integrity of Roger, Marc Savard and Reid Ribble. I can't say that I knew Marc Trager well enough to have assessed him similarly.
It's very important to note that Reid has had a many decades-long relationship with his professional association - the National Roofing Contractors Association and with the folks who were his suppliers and customers. They believe in him and trust him.
Which PACs have contributed to Roger?

Kaylynn...
At least you should focus on this election cycle
TOBY ROTH FOR CONGRESS WASHINGTON DC 20037 11/13/2009 $1,000
SECURA INSURANCE P.A.C. APPLETON WI 54915 12/19/2009 $1,000

FRIENDS OF STEVE NASS WHITEWATER WI 53190 01/11/2010 $200
Boy that's a whole lot of influence there, his uncle, three other legislators and SECURA....which also gave to Reid.
You add everything Roger has recieved from PAC's together...in three election cycles and it is still less that what the Roofers gave him....not counting individual donations.

Dale (Mon Aug 02 17:06:37 2010)
I had the opportunity to talk with Marc about his principled opposition to PAC money. Marc's concern is that the recipient of PAC money will be influenced by it. I respect his views on the matter without entirely agreeing with them.
More importantly, it seems to me that all this PAC discussion, the dates and dollars and districts from which it flows, might obscure the bigger questions: Where does the candidate stand? To what principles, if any, does he subscribe? Is his head screwed on straight? Does he understand the founders devotion to limited and government and separation of powers?
PAC money is not evil; Congresspersons who accept bribes are.

Rich Carlstedt (Tue Aug 03 00:46:08 2010)
Just had to add this: Ribble was president of the national roofers association (not sure of the exact name) so I should think it would be reasonable for them to donate to his campaign.
Or are we at the point where anyone who has a specific job should be ineligible for a legislative job? Accountants because they may receive money from the national accountant association? Supermarket managers because they receive donations from the supermarket manager association? This kind of thinking can lead to utter lunacy.

C. R. Stevenson (Tue Aug 03 09:56:25 2010)
Yes Char. Very well stated.

Jo (Tue Aug 03 10:37:45 2010)
Gee Jo...Nice wet sloppy kiss. From now on we can believe anything written about the 8th CD race on this blog non biased.
And when the lobbyist from the National Roofing Contractors Association are sitting across from Rep Ribble's desk asking for special favors you don't think they won't remind him about that $10,000?
That wasn't the normal RoofPac donation. They normally give a candidate about $1000. That donation was the max they can give for both the primary and the general. Both given on the same day.

Dale (Tue Aug 03 21:42:27 2010)
Dale,
Why only look at this election cycle? I think this exercise in examining PAC contributions from State Rep. Roth's entire political career is completely acceptable. As you say "and when the lobbyists from Rep." (fill in the PAC contributor here) "are sitting across from" (insert political candidate here) "asking for special favors, you don't think that they'll remind him about that" (insert political donation here).
By that rationale, we should more carefully scrutinize the folks who have spent time in office, to see if there's a correlation.....

Kaylynn (Wed Aug 04 06:38:46 2010)
OK....
All of Roth's PAC combined in your two posts don't equal what RoofPac gave Ribble in one day.
Ribble declared $20,500 in PAC contributions on his FEC report yet he only identifies $15,500 on his report. Who gave him the other $5,000??
On June 15th 18 doctors aka "The Physicians for Responsible Government" donated $27,000 to Ribble's campaign. Reid Ribble lists that group's endorsement on his website however, you can't find a website for the group. no mission statement, nothing on what they support, no non profit status, no PAC declaration
Did the group members donate as individuals to get around the Campaign Finance laws that limit a PAC's donation to $10,000?

Dale (Wed Aug 04 08:33:25 2010)
Everyone doesn't form a PAC to give money to a candidate. They're individuals and that's how they donate. Nothing particularly suspicious about that, I shouldn't think. That is, unless you're looking to dig up something suspicious.

C. R. Stevenson (Wed Aug 04 12:25:20 2010)
More PAC money from 2008 Complete Committee Name: Roth for Assembly 07/15/2008 WI Institute of CPA's PAC 235 N. Executive Drive #200, Brookfield, WI 53005 $250.00 07/15/2008 AGCWI PAC 4814 East Broadway, Madison, WI 53716 $250.00 Sub Total $500.00

Kaylynn (Wed Aug 04 15:26:20 2010)
Just one more thing, Reid Ribble and his fellow roofing contractors got together and are donating the roof including materials and labor for the future Fisher House in Milwaukee.
Lest you think this is a one time only political ploy to help his campaign, they've also donated roofs for 35 Habitat for Humanity houses in the past.

C.R. Stevenson (Thu Aug 05 08:12:49 2010)
I love you Ribble supporters...
Kagen $600,000 in PAC money and contributions from individuals from special interest industries bad...
Ribble's $200,000 from PAC's and out of state roofing contractors and suppliers good....
Kaylynn...you can look all day and all the special interest money Roger Roth has received in his political career won't equal 1/10 of Ribble's special interest money.
In fact it won't equal the money Reid Ribble has GIVEN to special interest groups and candidates in the past 4 years.

Dale (Thu Aug 05 09:17:57 2010)
Dale, what is a union but a bargaining unit and political action committee whose main reason to be is to lobby congress to get more money for their members.
What is the NRA but a political action group, only people join it of their own volition to protect their second amendment rights.
What I'm saying here is there are PACs of all kinds. They are not all bad and should not all be under suspicion.
