Petri constituent is livid. What do you think?
Bill Pollnow suggests the response, below, from U.S. Representative Tom Petri to his plea to limit federal spending was way off base. Bill is waving the RINO flag – and wants you to know about it.
The Petri letter is in response to a phone call Pollnow placed to Petri’s office in opposition to the extension of the unemployment benefits i.e. H.R. 4213. Pollnow saw so many things wrong with this type of legislation and representation, that he didn’t know where to begin. Pollnow:
[Petri] cites this as being declared “emergency legislation”, which makes “PAYGO” unnecessary. This means they don’t have to “offset” the money from another item in the “budget,” which is a very misleading word for how they spend money. He precedes to ramble on about the economy and “our neighbors in the 6th district.”
Then he tells me about his concern for no offset but “floor procedures” put in place by the “majority” didn’t allow the House to consider this option. These are the type of votes and Republican reasoning that is turning Ronald Reagan over in his grave. The best way to help the economy is for the federal government to back off from fixing it. VOTE NO TOM!!!! GET IT!!
September 10, 2010
Mr. Bill Pollnow [Address] Neenah, WI
Dear Bill:
Thank you for contacting me in opposition to legislation to reauthorize the extended unemployment insurance benefit program. I appreciate the opportunity to respond to your concerns.
As you may know, on July 22, 2010, the House of Representatives considered H.R. 4213, the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2010. This legislation proposed to extend the Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefit program through November 30, 2010, and to continue the 100 percent federal funding of the permanent Extended Benefits program through that same date. This bill did not include extensions of the COBRA health insurance subsidy or the additional $25 weekly unemployment benefit, both of which were enacted originally in the economic stimulus package. For budgetary purposes. H.R. 4213 was declared emergency legislation making offsets under the PAYGO law unnecessary. This bill was passed by a vote of 272 – 152 and signed into law later that day.
Some have objected to continued extensions of these programs due to concerns over our already high federal deficit. Others suggested that the cost of these programs be offset by cancelling stimulus spending that has yet to take place. These are real concerns. H.R. 4213 will add $33 billion to the deficit. At the same time, the economic recovery continues to sputter, and unemployment throughout the country remains at unacceptably high levels.
I am concerned about the impact that allowing the extended benefits to expire would have on unemployed workers, including our neighbors in the 6th District. For this reason, I voted in favor of extending these benefits. I do agree, however, that it would have been preferable for this spending to be offset. Unfortunately, under the floor procedures put in place by the majority, the House was not permitted an opportunity to consider this option. It is critical that congress bring spending under control, and I look forward to considering constructive efforts to restore responsibility to federal budgeting. I did not feel, however, that we should start by curtailing assistance to those whose lives have been impacted by a lengthy period of unemployment.
Please continue to contact me on issues on concern.
Sincerely, [signed] Tom Thomas E. Petri Member of Congress
Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like Bill Pollnow ought to spend a year or two on unemployment. Oh yea, but he could just go out and get hired to a job that is now in India or China.

Jack Lohman (Tue Sep 21 18:14:41 2010)
Congress is turning unemployment into a new welfare program. Unemployment was never meant to support families for two years. I don't mean to sound cold, but if you don't find a job in 26 weeks, why should the rest of us pay for you? Not to mention the country doesn't have the money for this.
Mark Belling made the point had a conservative challenged Petri in the primary, 2010 may have been the year that Petri would have been knocked off.
I think Petri has been good for the district, but with the federal government in the mess it's in, we need more Paul Ryan's. Petri only has a couple of more terms in him, then I think you'll have State Senator Randy Hopper running for that seat.
I am not ready to wave the RINO flag quite yet, but Mr. Petri better be supportive of Paul Ryan Republicans in a new Republican majority, cause if not Mr. Petri may put himself in trouble.
I don't think the TEA party wing is going away anytime soon!

Rohn W. Bishop (Tue Sep 21 19:22:00 2010)
The alleged conservative Reid (Get rid of career polititions) Ribble, yes the one who pulled that traditional republican trick of changing districts to avoid running against a 30 member of congress (who is also a republician) would have been an excelent choice to run against Tom Petri ... but noooooooooooo.

Michael Potter (Tue Sep 21 21:02:33 2010)
Paul Ryan is no different than the rest of the RINO's. Throw in Sensebrenner's name while your at it. The Tea Party's in Green Bay and Appleton are a front for the Establishment. There are many legitmate Tea Party's groups in WI, but Steineke and Savard's group are a front for the RNC.

Bill (Tue Sep 21 22:58:39 2010)
@Bill. I'm sure both Jim and Marc would be surprised to hear they're fronts for the RNC, especially Marc who dropped out of the 8th Cong. race for lack of funds. Also, seeing that Marc was the first one to have a Tea Party in the state, I do think it's a stretch to say he's the fair-haired boy of the RNC. Jim was also on board immediately. The RNC hasn't done anything that quickly since its inception so I wouldn't look for him being included in the cabal, either.
I do have to differ with you on who is the present day Establishment. Surprise! The Democrats have all the marbles!
Shockingly, I'm rather with you concerning Ryan. I've looked up his record and he does vote with the Dems quite often but seeing as how he seems to be the only one with a Ray-o-Vac leading us out of the morass (quagmire?) we seem to be stuck in guess I'll just stick with him for the time being.
Petri is a RINO. I've thought so for years and a quick scan of his record shows you that. The fact that Reid didn't run for his seat is beside the point. When you're 20 points behind you don't take out the player who is at least 80% with you and pull one out of the stands and hope for the best. You put your Freshman in the place where you need him but not where he's going to knock out an established player. Compared to the likes of Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins and Lindsey Graham Petri is an icon of conservative rectitude!
P.S. Look up Sensenbrenner's record. He has as close to 100% conservative credentials as anyone in Congress.

C. R. Stevenson (Wed Sep 22 09:31:55 2010)
i give petri credit for lifting a pen to sign this poorly-crafted form response as he usually doesn't even show me the professional courtesy of returning my calls or emails. as to its content, typical petri justification -- just like his "aye" votes on "cash for clunkers" and the resolution of disapproval against joe wilson. hey tom, do you still believe rep wilson was out of line?!?!?!
