Tom Nelson for Outagamie County Exec?
Friday’s piece in the Post-Crescent surmised in its headline that Assembly Majority Leader Tom Nelson, in losing his bid for Lt. Governor, was “hint[ing] at political comeback.”
Reading the article, I don’t know from whence any hinting came. Unless it was Nelson’s mentioning he’s “knocked on over almost [sic] 90,000 doors in six years.”
There is a time and place for everything, and right now it's (time) to finish up my term and continue to do my job as a state representative.
Given that about half of Nelson’s 5th Assembly district is in Outagamie County, perhaps half of those 90,000 doors belong to Outagamie County residents. And given that Nelson’s home is in Kaukauna, it’s not too much of a stretch to see the wisdom of a possible run for Outagamie County Executive.
Friday, Nelson contacted the Outagamie County Clerk’s office to inquire about filing for the County Executive race. He’s got a few months to make a decision about a run – though if he’s serious, Nelson knows he should file Declaration of Candidacy papers as soon as possible so he can begin raising (and transferring?) money for the effort. Nomination papers can be circulated beginning December 1 and a final decision need not be made for the April 5 election until the deadline for filing papers, 5:00 PM January 4, 2011.
Given all those doors and Nelson’s 24/7 campaign style, he would be a formidable candidate. Were the soon-to-be-former Assemblyman to take a run at the County Exec job, he’d be up against a crowded slate. Those already filing a Declaration of Candidacy include county Supervisors Charles Kramer and Ann Strauch, former county supervisor Mike Thomas and former Wisconsin state Treasurer Jack Voight.

COMMENTS
1. Is the Outagamie County Executive Position partisan?
2. Is the Calumet County Supervisor who is supporting a sales tax increase up for re-election?
3. If the good Mayor Hanna is appointed to the state position in December, would a special election be held this Spring to replace him?

The County Exec position is non partisan.
With the City of Appleton being so anti small business I sure hope Hanna has to stay put. He can,t run the city, so how can anyone expect that he could handle a state position.......but on the other hand, maybe good riddance !!!

Jo:
I have heard other rumors that the Lt. Governor bid was a throw away election to get more name recognition for a future run. The position that may be opening up would potentially be the U.S. Senate seat now occupied by Herb Kohl.
It is one thing if he is serious about running to address the significant budget problems that will be facing the County in future years due the State budget mess and the potential for drastic cuts in Shared Revenue.
It is another thing if we have another career politician looking for a place to "land" while they figure out their next political move. We need candidates who are dedicated to leading the County and not candidates who would leave the position they were elected for to seek "greener pastures".
I am running for County Executive and I don't mind competition, in fact I think it is healthy that the voter will have choices. I just don't like the political games and this looks like one to me.

Mike Thomas (Mon Nov 08 09:14:10 2010)
"Terrible Tommy's" bid for Lt Gov made no sense to me (And I told him so). Now, he's simply out of a job and has no visable means of support. (A problem with trying to be a Career Politician).
So, Jo's thesis doesn't surprise me. However, Tom has absolutely no Management experience, and the Exec job is like running a $200MM Company. He has no qualifications whatsoever for this important position. GLS

Tom "baby face" Nelson is nothing more than a partisan political hack! He made Assembly Majority Leader with amazing ambition and by screwing his own constituents.
Don't believe me, ask the folks in Hobart!
As noted by this blog, and by The Mark Belling Late Afternoon Show, Baby Face Nelson sold out the people of Hobart, who were holding up a liquor license for the Onedia Indian Nation Golf Course, because the Indians owed $50,000 in back taxes. Baby Face got them some kind of reservation status as a way to get the license and get around the back taxes.
Why did Baby Face do this, campaign cash to the Democrats!
So if Baby Face does run for County Exec.I would look to see a campaign completely bank rolled by Onedia and unions.
Two final points, Baby Face ran for Lt. Gov. because he most likely was going to get booted for the legislature. And second, Jack Voight deserves your vote.
Your district is to nice for a slime ball like Nelson

Rohn W. Bishop (Mon Nov 08 18:20:41 2010)
Nelson did not put the provision in the budget about the Oneida liquor license.
