NOW she stoops to working with Republicans?
This is chutzpah. Hubris. Straight out missing the point completely. In an op-ed in today’s USA Today, Nancy Pelosi waxes apparently philosophic. I’m incredulous.
The results of last week's elections reflected the genuine frustration of the American people, who are justifiably angered by the continued high unemployment rate.
…. much more needs to be done. Democrats will strive to work with the new Republican majority to create jobs, strengthen the middle class and reduce the deficit.
What?
Congressional experts have called the 111th Congress the most productive Congress in a half-century. Our Democratic members took tough votes to support America's working families, putting the American people before politics and thinking of the next generation, not the next election.
…. Republicans and Democrats must work together, with President Obama, to prepare for our nation for the 21st century while creating clean energy and infrastructure jobs. As we go forward, we welcome Republican ideas about job creation.
I’m incredulous, with mouth hanging wide open.

Now if only the R's will stoop to doing anything at all but vote NO.
Jo, how many R's voted yes at all in the last two years? Boehner has stated even now that the first priority is to get rid of Obama.... not get the economy going, pass single-payer (just repeal "Obama-care", address GW, .....

Dean Weichmann (Wed Nov 10 05:37:38 2010)
So what has there been to vote yes on? The 9bipartisan) bankster bailout? The obvious plan to use tax dollars to buy votes ala "stimuilus" plan which will bury our children in debt? A cap and tax bill all for an unproven climate theory that will destroy our economy? The fascist takeover of the health care industry that will drive up prices, subject doctors and other medical professionals to intense goverNMEnt scrutiny, destroying freedom and driving up prices at several levels?
Vote YES on the destruction of our liberty, our constitution, our sovereignty and our prosperity? To be sure, the Republicans dropped the ball when they were in charge, but to criticize them for doing what is right is illogical. Now to keep and eye on them, and to encourage them to vote right---or else.
And to go after the Dems and Republicans who are left who were and are a big part of the problem. See you in 2012.
Voting YES to freedom and prosperity often means voting NO on bills that would destroy both.

Ken Van Doren (Thu Nov 11 14:03:56 2010)
>>>Voting YES to freedom and prosperity often means voting NO on bills that would destroy both<<<
Problem is, you have no clue as to what bills would have such an effect.
>>>The obvious plan to use tax dollars to buy votes ala "stimuilus" plan which will bury our children in debt<<<
So, you are a macro-economist too? Fiscal stimulus, if it had actually been used, would help to get the economy going and put people to work. Do you think keeping people idle now is good for our children?
I would have much preferred single payer health care. Where were the R's on that?
>>>A cap and tax bill all for an unproven climate theory that will destroy our economy?<<<
Cap and trade was crap, I am glad it died. How about some bipartisan support for ending payroll taxes and replacing it with a carbon tax? Do two good things at once, stop taxing work and tax pollution.
As far as an unproven theory, the only way to prove it is to continue to destroy the one atmosphere we have.
Of climatologists, 97% say it is happening.

Dean Weichmann (Thu Nov 11 17:09:04 2010)
Mr. Weichmann,
>> As far as an unproven theory, the only way to prove it is to continue to destroy the one atmosphere we have.

What fascinates me is this: What proportion of climatologists say we should spend trillions of dollars attempting to mitigate the effects of whatever climate change is or is likely to occur...vs. the proportion that says that we should focus on adaptation.

Steve Erbach (Fri Nov 12 09:14:27 2010)
Dean, your comments suggest that beyond having two radically different ideologies, one other major difference between your ilk and the likes of Ken is the utility of common sense, which is apparently in woefully short supply among the liberal crowd.
"...you have no clue as to what bills would have such an effect."
Case in point.

Andrew Ellis (Fri Nov 12 09:24:18 2010)
Wow! We're having fun now. What is it that isn't understood about saying "NO" to bad bills. I shudder to think of what more Ms. Pelosi would have done without the Republicans standing firm. For this to even happen with all the RINOs in the Republican party tells you just how bad these bills are.
We have to wait for the bill to be passed so we can find out what's in it? What kind of damfool reasoning is that?
Also, what's with calling carbon dioxide pollution? It's what the whole world runs on. We exhale carbon dioxide, which plants need for growth and they exude oxygen which we need to live. It's a symbiotic relationship that we can't get rid of without killing the whole planet.
And Dean, you are a seer of magnificent talent to be able to read Ken's mind and know just what is going on in there? Whoops! That's right, you don't have to do that, you just have to be a leftwinger and you know it all.
Your statement that 97% of climatologists believe our atmosphere is being harmed is ludicrous. Please give me a list of names, or at least a somewhat credible source (not Daily Kos, D.U. or HuffPo, please).
The fact remains that there is no reason for the recession we find ourselves in. If Democrats had stopped spending money like they were insane, which began in January of 2007, and thrown a lasso around Freddie and Fannie this would have been a dip not a trip over a cliff.
I know all about the Republicans spending spree. That is agreed to, but the congressional Dems were also implicit in the spending the last two years of his presidency. This also includes Obama who did vote for the high spending measures.
Dean, you can keep hitting away on the theme of the haves vs. the have nots and the rich vs. the poor, but what that brings is socialism/Marxism/Communism. It destroys what our country was built on, which is American exceptionalism.
I suggest you spend more time overseas so you can understand what that means.
I love this country because of what it stands for. We've never had a king/queen, tyrant or dictator who we need to placate or bow down to. That's where the custom of Americans never bowing to anyone arises. In this country, depending on your brain power, cleverness and/or hard work the sky is the limit.
Please note that the man backing the Democrat party right now, is billionaire George Soros, an immigrant who wishes to manipulate this country. He brought the U.K. to its knees by manipulating its currency. I have a hunch it's what's going on in this country right now.
Be careful what you ask for. You might get it.

C. R. Stevenson (Fri Nov 12 09:35:06 2010)
>>> What proportion of climatologists say we should spend trillions of dollars attempting to mitigate the effects of whatever climate change is or is likely to occur...vs. the proportion that says that we should focus(spend trillions) on adaptation.
I think that it would be better to ask economists that question. One answer is the Stern Review:
>>>The Stern Review's main conclusion is that the benefits of strong, early action on climate change considerably outweigh the costs. It proposes that one percent of global gross domestic product (GDP) per annum is required to be invested in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change, and that failure to do so could risk global GDP being up to twenty percent lower than it otherwise might be. The Review states that climate change is the greatest and widest-ranging market failure ever seen, presenting a unique challenge for economics.[2] The Review provides prescriptions including environmental taxes to minimize the economic and social disruptions. It states, "our actions over the coming few decades could create risks of major disruption to economic and social activity, later in this century and in the next, on a scale similar to those associated with the great wars and the economic depression of the first half of the 20th century. And it will be difficult or impossible to reverse these changes. Tackling climate change is the pro-growth strategy for the longer term and it can be done in a way that does not cap the aspirations for growth of rich or poor countries.<<<
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stern_Review
There are always different opinions. Lomborg comes to mind. He favors adaption. Keep in mind that many feel that GW is inevitable and adaptation is unavoidable, both are needed. No one knows how severe these changes will be. Taking steps now such as the carbon tax will help to mitigate GW.

Dean Weichmann (Fri Nov 12 09:35:44 2010)
>>>Also, what's with calling carbon dioxide pollution? It's what the whole world runs on.<<<
The world runs on carbon mostly, CO2 is the exhaust. The world can recycle some of it, but the world is burning it too fast.
>>>This data comes from a new survey out this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The study found that 97 percent of scientific experts agree that climate change is "very likely" caused mainly by human activity.
The report is based on questions posed to 1,372 scientists. Nearly all the experts agreed that it is "very likely that anthropogenic greenhouse gases have been responsible for most of the unequivocal warming of the Earth's average global temperature in the second half of the twentieth century."<<<

Dean Weichmann (Fri Nov 12 10:07:11 2010)
Taking steps now such as the carbon tax will help to mitigate GW.
Yeah, like peeing in the ocean will help to keep the water level from receding. It's a question of understanding based in quantification. One volcanic eruption; natural aspiraton of vegetation that covers our planet, and other natural processes far and away outstrip mankind's contribution to carbon dioxide on the earth. Humans could disapper tomorrow and the atmosphere would continue on its merry way, just as it goes now.
The only thing a carbon tax will do is impoverish and cripple the nations that provide food and products for the rest of the world!
And Jo - you should close your mouth over the deposed Speaker of the House. You shouldn't be that surprised by the behavoir and utterances of a person who suffers from mental and emotional disorders. Pelosi: Poster child for term limits.

Duke (Fri Nov 12 10:08:56 2010)
>>>The only thing a carbon tax will do is impoverish and cripple the nations that provide food and products for the rest of the world!<<<
Care to explain how?

Dean Weichmann (Fri Nov 12 10:13:15 2010)
You guys, the carbon/global warming issue is interesting - always. Especially the (very) different perspectives espoused here. But the point of the article is that all of a sudden, Speaker Pelosi indicates an interest in talking with Republicans. Imagine. Don't you think it's a little late? What does she really mean by it? How can (should?) collaborating work better this time around, implemented by GOP leadership?

JO (Fri Nov 12 10:17:54 2010)
"Pelosi: Poster child for term limits"
One thing to keep in mind with term limits, when you force one group of voters to get rid of a deadbeat representative, you at the same time force other voters to remove outstanding reps. So that poses the question should the government, (or term limit pushers) have the authority to remove the voters right to elect the representative THEY want...
I say no, if you don't like someone in an elected office, work harder to get them voted out, don't impede the rights of others because you can't seem to get rid of your bad rep.
Not Term limits!

joe (Fri Nov 12 10:39:38 2010)
Jo, when the subject is Nancy Pelosi, I fear constructive conversation is nearly impossible. I would almost say that to suggest it is already to give her far more credit than the woman could possibly deserve.

Andrew Ellis (Fri Nov 12 10:59:49 2010)
Duke;
>>> natural processes far and away outstrip mankind's contribution to carbon dioxide on the earth<<<
Ya'all are fond of making statements without anything to back it up. I am not a climatologist, nor are you. Cite a link to someone credable.

Dean Weichmann (Fri Nov 12 14:43:31 2010)
>>>What is it that isn't understood about saying "NO" to bad bills.<<<
CR, do you miss the point deliberatly or are you dense? How do you or Ken know that a bill is bad? Most of us non-ledgislators do not read bills.
>>> For this to even happen with all the RINOs in the Republican party tells you just how bad these bills are.<<<
It tells me the R's are not independent enough.
>>>We have to wait for the bill to be passed so we can find out what's in it? What kind of damfool reasoning is that?<<< What kind of damfool thinks that is what I said?
