UW schools failing black students miserably
Wisconsin is failing miserably in conquering the college graduation gap, according to a recent analysis by the Education Trust, a Washington-based think tank.
We’ve found that some institutions have horrendous graduation-rate gaps between white and black students—well above the national average. And it turns out that other institutions have no gaps at all. Indeed, in dozens of colleges, black students graduate at rates equal to or higher than their white counterparts.
In other words, it’s not entirely about preparation, and wide gaps in the graduation rates of white and black students are not inevitable. Our analysis strongly suggests that what colleges do with and for the students they admit matters a great deal.
The report speaks glowingly of the many “small-gap” (it looks as though that means about 5% or less) colleges and universities that have diligently and successfully implemented achievement strategies that work.
UW System strategies have apparently not worked. UWM (28.2%), UW-Whitewater (27.3%) and UW-Madison (23.3%) are included on the list of the country’s 25 public colleges and universities with the larges white-black graduation rate gaps. Not something to brag about.
…. Although there can be no question that our high schools need to do more for and better by African-American students, Winthrop University and UNC’s Greensboro and Charlotte campuses provide evidence that when colleges and universities commit to the hard work of improving student achievement, all students benefit—particularly African Americans.
Similar stories of commitment and examples of promising practices surely exist at other colleges and universities on the small-gap list. These institutions do not focus on what other institutions should have or could have done for their students; instead, they have recognized and taken responsibility for their own role in advancing equity. Most important, they have proved that with dedication and intentionality, any higher education institution can ensure that all students succeed at equal rates.
The study is a quick read – eight pages and most of it is tables. If the UW schools mentioned above take the many suggestions in the study to heart, is Wisconsin on its way to addressing its black unemployment challenges and comparatively low number of college graduates all at once?

Ah yes, so let's keep reducing taxes and spending those taxes less on schools and more on projects that the special interests prefer.

Jack Lohman (Tue Dec 14 08:15:40 2010)
This is obviously a culture problem. Example: In Detroit and most other large cities, the numbers of black students dropping out of high school is enormous. Near 76% in Detroit and averaging near 50% nationwide. It's the same reason that blacks are more apt to go to prison, use drugs, deal drugs and live a life of crime. Single moms has tripled to 44% in the last three decades and living off welfare. with no dads create an invireonment that is unstainable and may never recover. They cannot hold decent jobs, if they do marry it is in jeopardy fromm the word go, are not church goers, less likely to attain assests and it increases stress and depression levels of huge consequences. Child delinquency doubles, psyhcological problems rise and raises mortality rates. Teenage pregnancy also leads to being less likely to do well in school, will not graduate from college nor hold down a steady job because of a lack of skills and incentives. The above comes from a new study just released by the University of Virginia. This is not entirely a black problem as the secular movement within much of the country has driven traditional family morals to the worst levels in history. Unfortunately blacks lead the parade with a lack of value in marriage, being involved in Church or other community and civic organizations but it is a national trend of great proportions for teens and young people of all cultures especially. Notice that the three Universities mentioned in Wisconsin are all in the Milwaukee, Kenosha, Madison, Beloit high black areas of Wisconsin. It mostly all comes down to parenting and getting back to strong families with two parents and decent jobs requiring skills that are falling fast. Money for school systems has very little to do with it as we spend double what other Western countries do and with less results.

John Hyland (Tue Dec 14 09:23:57 2010)
No John, it doesn't all come back to parenting. Read the report. Some universities in areas with large black populations have had good success. Read the report.
Jack, the report doesn't say anything about costs. It doesn't say anything about tuition, scholarship levels and state support per student. Those would be interesting numbers to look at. A better graduation result isn't necessarily driven by more money.

Jo (Tue Dec 14 09:36:54 2010)
JO, I said mostly, not all. There is no question that parenting is a huge problem in the black culture. No escaping it.

John Hyland (Tue Dec 14 09:48:19 2010)
Jo,
I am pretty well aware of the efforts of UW schools to recruit and support minority students. I have been impressed with the commitment shown by several administrations to these ends.
I read the article you cited and I find it disturbingly vague and filled with the kind of rhetoric that promotes equality of result over equality of opportunity. I'd love to gas on more on this topic, but I just don't have time. Maybe we can talk about it.
Regards, Tim
