    Privatize UW-Mad?

They’re thinking about it in Michigan – what would a privatized UW-Madison look like?
One way to reverse this trend, and perhaps to beat the private competition, is for the University of Michigan to go private itself. The idea isn’t as drastic as it may sound. While the amount of state money going to the University is substantial — some $320 million per year — this amounts to less than 8 percent of the 2004 operating budget of the university and its health system. In fact, James Duderstadt, U of M’s president emeritus, has described the school as “a privately supported public university.”

It would look just like walmat, everyone make $10/hour and no benefits. Just about everyone on this site wants everyone else but them to make minimum wage and no benefits. Sorry, they want you to have benefits if you pay $400/month out of the minimum wage. Jo you are always bashing unions, your other posters may know but I don’t, what do you do for a living and what do you receive in pay and benefits.

Privatization works most of the time and sometimes there are things it doesn't work well for.

Joe, I think Jo is here mostly to inform liberals like yourself and conservatives like me.

It isn't that she hates union and neither do I. I just happen to think unions are past their usefulness and exist now simply for money and power. The only reason the Democrats lost this year was because the people understand you really can't spend what you don't have forever. Sooner or later the piper must be paid.

    See? It's simple!

Like I said previously, look at walmart I believe last year they made 3.8 billion and paid their workers average of $11/hour with few benefits. In a perfect world I agree with you, if employers were fair with wages and how they treat employees unions would not be necessary.

What is going to happen in this country is what happens in Mexico, 5% of the population has 90% of the wealth. My uncle was a programmer for a large machine shop in Texas, the company moved to Mexico to be so called more profitable. He was offered the same job in Mexico, with same pay even paid in dollars instead of pacos. The big change the common Mexican worker receives $1/hour the government sets minimum wage at $.78/hour that way everybody is happy, no greedy union works. Can’t wait for that to happen here just so I can hear all the business owners wonder why no one can afford their products that should really help this country.

Joe, my main job is publishing FoxPolitics News, which is six to seven hours every week day, for which I receive no pay and no benefits - only a great knowledge of current events. I'm active in politics and government, as well as serving on several nonprofit boards in our community.

Consider the possibility that liberals might be able to inform as well. Learning requires an open mind.

No one here ever said liberals can't inform. I welcome, enjoy reasoned, constructive arguments.

Jo, I read and reply to your blog because generally people here have been respectful and polite. I disagree much of the time but that is only a plus because ya can't argue with people you agree with. I want to thank you for hosting this site.
