    Uninsured drivers.... grrrr

Having convened a panel of experts, the Journal Sentinel last Sunday explained the plight of lawbreakers whose driver’s licenses are suspended or revoked for “offenses that have nothing to do with being behind the wheel” – typically for non-payment of fines or parking tickets. The editorial shared the extent of the problem – 80,000, mostly low income, Milwaukee County residents alone have such problem licenses. And of course, not having a driver’s license makes it much more difficult to hold down a job – perpetuating the problem of non-payment of fines – or whatever it is that instigated a suspension in the first place. .

According to the Journal Sentinel Editorial Board, a backlog of 15,000 driving-after-revocation charges has been virtually eliminated simply because Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi “redefined ‘habitual traffic offender,’ a definition that comes with an automatic five-year revocation. He stopped including citations for vehicle-related problems. Now only driving violations, such as speeding and drunken driving are counted. And he applied the narrowed definition retroactively.”

Good. Makes great sense. Going beyond that, the Editorial Board and its panel of experts put a good set of additional recommendations together to address license revocation problems. Good again.

Now, though a necessity for most, driving is still a prvilege. So, could the Editorial Board PLEEEASE convene a panel of experts to figure out how to keep uninsured drivers off the road?

How about this brilliant thought – actually require proof of insurance (Wisconsin doesn’t) when renewing your vehicle’s registration every year. Lots of states do it (ok, so it’s not that brilliant). What is the problem?

    Thanks, Jo
My daughter was hit by an uninsured drunken driver 3 years ago; thank goodness no one was hurt, but the car was totaled.

I had to pay the $500.00 deductible. What happened to having to have "financial responsibility" or insurance to register your car?  I could not agree with you more WI needs to require car insurance, or enforce the "financial responsibility" exemption.

It was beautiful, clear fall day, I was driving a neighbor whose wife delivered at St. Mary's hospital and the Dad needed a ride home. Around 7:30am, the highway almost deserted, I was rear ended from out of nowhere at 65 mph. I pulled over and looked behind to see a car with a skull and bones license plate and the Mexican Flag on the mirror. After calling the Sheriff the car pulled away and left.

Bingo, he was later caught and booked, stolen car, from an aquaintance, no insurance, no license and no proof of anything. Released on a cash bond he disappeared to somewhere.

Insurance is a fact of driving, period. It is not a right, it's an earned privilege.

Thank God the two fathers survived.

Same thing happened to me. My car was incapacitated by an uninsured driver. The following weekend, I was forced to buy a new car.

Sorry for everyones trouble but only law abiding citizens obey laws. Suspending or Revoking driver licenses doesn't keep outlaws from driving. Buy uninsured motorist coverage!
