    Short Takes

    Wetlands lemons to wetlands lemonade, breaking promises and Redi Kilowatt. Hmmm.

    Rich Eggleston, Communications and Community Outreach Coordinator, Wisconsin Alliance of Cities, on the discovery of wetlands in a Town of Menasha park:
    I know there are a few people who think the only good wetland is a filled wetland, if it doesn't happen to be a drained wetland, but the town officials should consider the upside:

    • They don't have to water to keep the grass green;
    • The park will be very popular during waterfowl season;
    • They can name their baseball team the Menasha Mallards;
    • Or the Menasha Mandarins, after a more exotic species of duck.

    Or are they trying to duck the issue entirely?

    Mike Prentiss, Communications maven for Senate Minority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, in light of universal health insurance coming to the floor of the Senate at the last minute Monday, points out Senator Majority Leader Robson’s words of reform, straight from her web site, dated January of this year…..
    “[The Senate will be looking to require a] waiting period between when legislation is introduced and when a public hearing is held on it. This will allow the public adequate time to prepare comments and testimony.”

    “It’s hard to believe that before there was a way to rush a bill to the floor without even allowing a chance for public review and comment. The process of making public policy needs to include the public,” Robson said.

    And from FoxPolitics News reader Lon Ponschock, after attending a “Community Meeting” to learn more about Riverheath, a “mixed use development” plan for a section of Appleton’s formerly industrial-use riverfront:
    Overall the development looked to be a gentrified 'lifestyle center' of some sort. The costs of one of the 'units' (houses or apartments or whatever) is estimated to be $200K to $400K each. Riverheath certainly doesn't even pretend to include any low income units. Mixed use is define on the website as the “inclusion of offices and a restaurant.”

    On the positive side, the developers want to introduce some sustainability elements, the primary of which is hydroelectric power. Appleton is noted as being home to the nation’s first hydroelectric plant which provided in-home lighting at The Hearthstone. (Do you remember Redi Kilowatt?)
    Here’s an updated version of Redi. Fun.
