It's not Doyle's good looks that bring in the big bucks

Holy cow. Nearly 20% of the total dollars accepted by Governor Doyle from 2002 through 2006 was contributed from outside the state. It’s not the most encouraging news when you hear that of a congressional candidate, but at least it’s understandable, given that our U.S. representatives and senators vote on myriads of issues with nationwide implications. But the governor of the state of Wisconsin?

You’ve got to look at this chart put together by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. You’ll see Doyle’s out-of-state numbers are in the comparative stratosphere – hitting that $1 million big ones level. Wow. And that $1M is a whole lot more than Thompson’s big year of $300K raised from out-of-state donors in 1994.

    Other details to pick up:

    • In the 2006 election cycle, Doyle raised a total of $1.8 million from out-of-state donors. In the same period, Mark Green raised $336,962, which included individual contributions first accepted in his congressional campaign coffers.
    • Doyle’s out-of-state contributions totaled 19% of his total for the 2006 election cycle; that compares with 5% for Green and 11% for Thompson during his campaign years. That’s an astounding difference.
    • What are the relationships, the reasons? Not his good looks, I daresay. Biggest bucks came from law firms and “banking & finance.”
    • One big contributor was Cisco Corporation, through its employees and their wives. That was in 2006 – the same year John and Tashia Morgridge, retired Cisco CEO and his wife, contributed $50 million for the building of the Morgridge Institute for Research on the UW campus. The Morgridge’s $50M was “matched by a state contribution of $50 million advocated by Gov. Jim Doyle and approved by the State Building Commission.” Was that huge contribution, and the desire that it be accepted on his terms and matched by $50M in state money, impetus for the cuddly Morgridge relationship with Doyle?
    • Second to Cisco Systems in the big bucks category were Levin Leichtman Capital Partners, Los Angeles, and Newmark Knight Frank, a New York real estate firm. What connections do these guys have with Doyle? Law school buddies? Between the two firms, more than $75,000 in some kind of friendship….
    • Doyle planned – and carried out - lots of outsourcing, millions and millions of dollars worth. Is that why the sharks were circling so close in 2002 and maybe in 2006?

Man. 20% of the fundraising of a state governor done outside the state. One million bucks worth. There oughta be a law…. Well, at the very least, there oughta be a voter uprising in 2010....

    COMMENTS

The most effective campaign finance reforem will come when we insist candidates raise ALL funds in the district or state of the district from individuals only, no PAC monies, no limit to the contributions but posted on the internet within 24 hrs. No money in the last 48 hrs of a campaign. We need desperately to keep elections at home.
