    Honor - or glorification?

Morning, noon or evening. Raise your American flag in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11 – and in honor of those who have lost their lives fighting for freedom from terror, and importantly as well, to honor those great soldiers fighting for freedom today.

Join our men and women in uniform. Be an American Patriot. Today and every day. Fly the flag in honor of those freedoms we hold so dear.

So, all of that said, is it time too, to question the celebration of Patriot Day in memory of the “nearly three thousand who died in the September 11 attacks”? Blasphemy? How does one express doubts about the gallantry we describe in words such as “Patriot Day?”

A Wall Street Journal opinion piece last week dared tread on those sacred halls housing long-nurtured grievous memories of 9/11:

“Arguments have finally broken out over whether the clock has run on commemorating the events of September 11, with year No. 6 arriving next Tuesday. On one side is the view that some in the 9/11 'victim community' have turned it into the Day That Can Never Go Away.

“At the center of that argument are questions about the status in our culture of emotions and grief. Their status is very large. The cost of the unbuilt 9/11 Memorial at the World Trade Center site is about $600 million. How can that be?”

Does $600 million honor – or glorify?

With incalculable respect and honor to those families who lost loved ones on September 11… perhaps it’s time to move on.

A New York Times article a week ago spoke of “little-noticed law suits” brought against the airlines, security companies and others, asking for money for lost loved ones above and beyond the “minimal award[s]” from the federal compensation fund.

I don’t mean this to be a discussion of how much a life is worth. Again, that adjective – incalculable. One of the plaintiffs, suing on behalf of his then 72-year-old mother, said “You become obsessed by it.” The article writes that “the grief of the survivors is powerful.” Have we as a nation nurtured that grief?

Perhaps. But when you have lost a loved one, you must, at some point, move on.

Patriot Day is one thing. A $600 million contentious, still unbuilt monument is another thing. Millions and millions more to compensate families for the deaths of that horrific day is still another. And families that continue to hold our government hostage in decisions surrounding that fateful day is another.

Fly the stars and stripes boldly and proudly. When death comes, respect, honor and grieve it. This day, honor the deaths of September 11 and the deaths of our soldiers in the U.S. assault on terrorism. Above all, commemorate those protecting our freedoms today. Patriot Day – a day of honor and respect. A day to honor – and yes, glorify - the precious freedoms we enjoy every minute here in the United States of America.

    COMMENTS

I think "move on" is the wrong way to describe what we might do. It connotes dismissal of the memory of a horrible event in an effort to march into tomorrow. I think we might better commemorate those killed on 9/11 by living today fully and with purpose, whatever that might be for each of us. The German philosopher Goethe said "Nothing is worth more than this day." How can we live it fully engaged if we're distracted by the past? We can't.
Perhaps it's semantics. Move on, so we can be fully engaged in the present. You describe my thoughts well. Good. JE
