Speaker Huebsch, please don't drink the Kool-Aid!

Governor Doyle wants to "whine" and dine at the mansion today, begging legislative leaders to drink the Kool-Aid of compromise.

For his part, Governor Doyle insulted me with his “Opportunity Budget” speech way back in February, with attacks on “big oil” and “big tobacco” and smoke and mirrors promises. And amidst all that he’s the one that said we “must make hard choices” – and this “begins with hard cuts.”

And Mike McCabe and his pots and pans noisemakers last week says he’s embarrassed to have to witness the “spectacle” of an unsettled budget.

Well I’m embarrassed to live in a state that’s already one of the highest taxed in the country and has dug itself into a multi-billion dollar deficit hole and has a credit rating almost at the very bottom of the 50 states.

It’s time somebody stuck to their guns. It’s time somebody said “No,” we’re just not going to raise taxes. It’s time somebody said a 5% increase in spending is enough. It's time somebody said $1.2 billion more in “natural growth” of revenues is enough.

It’s high time more of us appreciated the tremendous work the Assembly has done in putting taxpayers first by passing AB 506, a critically needed portion of the budget bill. And now it’s high time for the Senate to take up AB 506 and its companion levy control legislation, AB 507.

    So, two things.
First, tell Speaker Huebsch he’s doing a great job. Let him know you appreciate him sticking to his guns. No new taxes. Speaker, we know you’re under tremendous pressure by the likes of Mike McCabe to settle this budget. (Why? He’s embarrassed???) And WEAC. And school principals and municipal leaders. And college students.

Pressure or not, your response to Senate Majority Leader Robson was great when she offered to take Healthy Wisconsin out of the budget. Of course, in exchange you were supposed to accept $1 billion worth of taxes. Geez. Your response? - “I am providing you nothing in return.” Good. Excellent.

Speaker Huebsch, we are with you on this. Do not drink the Kool-Aid.

Now, second. If your State Senator is a Democrat, you have a second task. Send him/her an e-note: the Senate simply must take up school and municipal funding bills (AB 506, AB 507) in the Senate. Now. Today. It’s got to be all done by Friday – or your property taxes go up to make up the difference. Call or e-mail now!

    COMMENTS

Huebsch already caved. Between the school funding and his fee increases he's lost any place to stand and holler about fiscal responsibility.

He's been outmaneuvered right down the line except for 12 hours of last week and he'll be out maneuvered again away from the TV cameras.
Looking for your advice here Grumps. What would you have tried to hold school increases to - ? $200 each year? Or something else? What fee increases would you not have accepted? Lastly, where would you cut spending in the Assembly budget? JE

This article should be read by every person in the State of Wisconsin. It's high time somebody draws a line in the sand and says "ENOUGH"!

    Ric (Mon Sep 24 10:08:00 2007)

Enough "what," Ric? Enough roads? Enough education? Enough prisons? Enough local aid? Enough care for the elderly? What services that you get would you like to see cut?

It's hard to compliment any legislator that is involved in this process. No matter which side they are on, they are always taking political potshots at each other, and nothing gets done. Even when they try to offer solutions, the opening salvo is to criticize the other party first.

How can anyone say "good job: when the state budget is this far overdue?
