Ron Paul & Jeff Flake - they pass the test
Sticking to your guns, that is. Know what you believe in and why and then stick to it through thick and thin.
Rep. Jeff Flake (R – AZ) is one of those guys. Kind of a hero of mine – really beaten up by his peers – Dems and Republicans alike, for being hard-nosed in his opposition to congressional earmarks.
Participating in Americans for Prosperity's "Defending the American Dream Summit," I stood six feet away from Rep. Flake and House Minority Leader John Boehner yesterday as they railed in favor of accountability for earmarks – and against secret requests that never see the light of day. I loved it. Has your U.S. Representative signed on to AR 559, which would force Boehner’s earmark accountability bill (HR 479) out of the Rules Committee? (Hint: All 3 WI GOP Representatives have signed on – none of the 5 Dems have. Boehner needs 22 more signatures – Which WI Dems will sign on to earmark reform?)
Rep. Ron Paul for President? Talk about a guy that sticks to his guns. A group of Fox Valley Ron Paul supporters are out there week after week, doing what they can do to get folks to sit up and take notice of this 71 year-old M.D. who knows exactly what he believes in – and it surely ain’t today’s U.S. government.
Brian Heyer, a Greenville CPA, FoxPolitics reader and ardent Ron Paul supporter, shared what happened when a few Ron Paul volunteers got together one Saturday afternoon to defend this guy with principles of steel. Check out this Youtube video showing Ashwaubenon police officers kicking two Ron Paul sign holders off a pedestrian sidewalk (on a city street overpassing a freeway), threatening that ambiguous catch-all of police-thuggery, "Disorderly Conduct" and a $250 fine.
The Ron Paul sign in question is rip-proof Tyvek, securely fastened to 2x2 lumber. Perfectly safe. Nevertheless, earlier this week the DOT handed the intrepid liberty-loving volunteers a copy of the regs and told them they couldn't 'erect' a sign near the highway. Of course the DOT is absolutely right. Except for the fact that "erect" means "construct" and no one was constructing a sign over the highway. They are holding their personal property on a designated pedestrian right-of-way and expressing their political preference.
Furthering the conspiracy to violate civil rights and chill political speech, the WI-DOT came back the next day and made it obvious they were videotaping the two sign holders. (Looks like there's room to cut the DOT's labor and video camera budget.) A month prior, police also hustled Ron Paul volunteers off the pedestrian walkway, which was the start of this pattern of abuse. I can't wait to see what else is on that DOT videotape.
Typical. Ron Paul fighting an uphill battle. Whether you subscribe to all of Representative Paul’s beliefs or not, you’ve got to admire this guy’s moxie (and apparently, the moxie of his supporters). And the way he sticks to his guns. And his reverence for liberty and freedom. I love it.
President Bush and SCHIPS One more guy that’s sticking to his guns. David Brooks’ article this week does a great job explaining President Bush’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. Doing exactly the right thing for America and for America’s children.
COMMENTS
In regards to the paid-for-by-our-tax- dollars Ashwaubenon PD kicking the tax-paying citizen holding the Ron Paul for President banner, off the pedestrian sidewalk on the paid-for-by-our-tax-dollars public property overpass:
This group of young Americans have been up there for weeks and weeks holding, not attaching or affixing, but holding, their personal, homemade banners with no problem. All of a sudden, when the DOT decided it was a problem, well then the Ashwaubenon Police Department came to the same conclusion. Political speech on public property is a 1st Amendment RIGHT. Not a privilege to be given by the *authorities*. The claim, given by Officer Rollin, of distraction to traffic (as seen widely in the Youtube video )is ridiculous. If that's the case, no billboard or highway sign at all should be on any road, anywhere. His insinuation that billboards and other signs are not distracting because they have been 'permitted' to be there, is as nonsensical and intellectually vacant as his attempt to compare the right to free speech and the 'right' to sell hot dogs.
Somewhere in between all the SWAT training and other homeland security funded training that is federalizing our police against the citizens... can we sneak in a little Constitution 101?
As Dr. Ron Paul says, we have got to come to our senses about what is happening in this country. I add, before it is too late. And it is already so late.
Oh, and Officer Rolling? Wisconsin is an open carry and concealed carry w/permit state, FYI. Ask Governor Doyle about that.

I'm glad this is getting the coverage as a first amendment issue it deserves.
It shows that minority candidates in both parties-- Kucinich and Paul are having similar problems. At least Paul got invited to the event. Kucinich has been dropped off some of the debating opportunities.
Over the months we will see of the bludgeon of mass media and brutality tactics quash the grassroots candidates of choice. It's my understanding all presidential candidates were invited, regardless of party, but I'd have to confirm that. No Democrats showed up, but it's understandable why, as their policies would be vastly different from principles held by most members of AFP. JE
