Who has forgotten Jay Johnson?
De ja vu. This Kagen-Favre-special-bill-of-praise-thing this week makes me think of Jay Johnson. Oh horrors. (Rep. Kagen's bill)
Representative Jay W. Johnson (Dem., Green Bay) wasn’t so much as sworn in on January 7, 1997, as the Packers won the Super Bowl! How could there be anything more exciting than that?
Just for old time’s sake, here’s Rep. Johnson, Senator Feingold, and even Secretary Donna Shalala, turning out to honor the Super Bowl winning Packers at the Clinton White House.
It was ten years ago that Jay Johnson came to the hallowed speaker’s well in the House of Representatives to praise the Packers after their Super Bowl win in January of 1997. I can see his speech on C-Span as clear as if it was yesterday. He actually was not wearing a cheesehead chapeau. Glory be.
From a Library of Congress/Thomas query, the first speech the Honorable Jay Johnson made on the floor of the House was on May 8, 1997, “saluting the spirit of volunteerism and the work of Leo Frigo of Green Bay, WI.” The second speech was on May 20 of that year – and it’s the Packers speech I saw on C-Span. For old time’s sake, here it is in its entirety: Mr. Speaker, I rise today to salute the Super Bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers, who are in the Nation's Capital today as we prepare in this Chamber to debate a balanced budget agreement, the first in a long time; another long road to success will be celebrated here at the White House this afternoon as the champions of the football world meet the champions of the free world.
From Lambeau to Lombardi to Holmgren, from Bart Starr to Brett Favre, it has been 29 years since the Green Bay champions, the Super Bowl champions, the Packers, have once again returned the Lombardi trophy to its home, Green Bay, WI.
Behind this great tradition of winning are the fans, affectionately known as the Cheeseheads. They are in fact the owners of the Green Bay Packers. They have raised money to keep the team in the community, built a new stadium, sold out Lambeau Field for every game since the Packer's first Super Bowl victory.
May the grand tradition of the Super Bowl Green Bay Packers continue. I ask my colleagues to salute the Green Bay Packers, America's original `America's Team.'
Just for the record, Rep. Johnson gave the Pledge of Allegiance on May 20 as well. On May 22, he wished Happy 50th Anniversary to WNAM-AM. He spoke on August 1 offering a salute to Vince Lombardi. In September, he offered tributes to Virgil Murphy and Charles L. Johnson.
This is not to say Rep. Johnson’s speeches were only laudatory. The record shows participation in house debates and/or “extensions of remarks” 10 times in 1997. In July, it was a 5 minute address speaking to milk price supports. And also a 1-minute or so piece opposing “Republican tax cuts… for families earning $100,000 or more.” On September 10, it was a 5-minute speech very early in the morning as part of a marathon session on Campaign Finance Reform. Interesting, if you’re really into that stuff. Rep. Johnson also spoke 12 times in 1997 to other matters – laudatory, as above.
Let’s just say Jay Johnson, news reader and reporter, was not the most cerebral representative sent to Washington D.C. by the folks of Wisconsin’s 8th congressional district. He was defeated in November 1998 after only one term by then Assemblyman Mark Green, R-Green Bay.
COMMENTS
Wait. This is sarcasm. I get it. Heh.
Is there some kind of clone shop where the Republicans get their candidates? You know, guys that look like they came out of the womb wearing a blue blazer, rep tie and Sabego loafers?
Without going to the photos, I can't think of any points of difference (as on one of those FBI facial recognition programs) between Green and Wieckert.
The Jay Johnson era was one of relative calm as I recall. And the Dems don't have the equivalent of a Fighting Bob. La Follette should be the real hero of the Republican majority rather than war mongering gits and irresponsible handlers of the nation's wealth such as Greenspan.
Or catamites like Mark Green. A catamite? JE

Jo, He may not have been your most cerebral, but he's surely your most bitter. What do you think the odds are he makes a re-appearance in a Kagen re-election TV ad next year?
I think Kagen definately takes the award for most egotistical. I love it. Yes, Bitter and the Mint. A new drink? Bitter, and the president of a Family Violence Relief Center. Hmmm. Oh yes, Dr. Kagen will use him in Green Bay. Do you think it matters to voters if they pick up egotism in their representative? JE

Don't know. Just find it ironic, that one of the reasons I heard from the McCormick backers for not backing Gard was John's ego.
Guess they projected on the wrong candidate... Interesting... thanks Kevin. JE

Jo, I think you ought to cut Lon Ponshock off from posting.
Calling Mark Green a catamite is one of the lowest things I've ever seen posted in the internet and I check out some of the liberal ones. The only thing he left out was the f-bomb as in "Mark Green is an eff-bomb catamite."
Especially about Mark Green, who's probably one of the straightest arrows who ever went into or came out of the House.
I'd like to go over to Lon's house and stuff his mouth full of Fels Naphtha soap, the dirty pig! Yes Char, I agree it's not a word that should be used about anyone, much less Mark Green. I could have opted to remove it - and should have. Nuts. JE
