    Push 'em back, push 'em back, wa-a-a-y back

    I’m with talk show host Jerry Bader who compared the budget fight to a football game – and said the Assembly Republicans are two touchdowns ahead. (I’m subbing for Jerry today and tomorrow – it will be great fun!)

    I’m with Representative Frank Lasee who rails (in yesterday’s Lasee’s Notes) against “our left-leaning mainstream media” that have produced budget coverage that “has been one-sided and poor.”

    I’m with Fred Dooley who reminds us holding the line on taxes is NOT extreme.

    I’m with Senate Minority Leader Scott Fitzgerald who is working hard to get AB 506 and AB 507, funding for public schools and local governments, taken up by the Senate. As of 3:00 yesterday afternoon, he needed just two Democrats. It’s time to overcome Robson’s staunch resistance to acting on school and municipal aids.

    I’m with Senator Ellis who lambasts the governor for his grandstanding and threats to shut down the government.

    I was shocked and extremely surprised to read about your comments in a press conference this afternoon warning of a possible government shutdown “in the next month or two” if the legislature fails to adopt a budget for 2007-09.

    Governor, you know full well the state of Wisconsin does have a budget. We are operating just as we were a year ago. Despite your rhetoric to the contrary, senior citizens are receiving assistance for purchasing drugs under Senior Care, UW students are receiving state financial aid, and state employees are still receiving paychecks….

    If I am wrong, please tell me exactly where I am wrong. Tell me and tell Wisconsin’s taxpayers exactly where we are in imminent danger of running out of money. Tell us exactly how we could have burned through $13.45 billion in only three months of a fiscal year.

    I’m with RPW Chair Reince Preibus who said “The governor underestimated the strength of the Assembly Republican caucus when he attempted to bribe members with pet projects before [Monday’s] vote.

    • Mary Williams (R-Medford): $7 million for a paper mill in Park Falls;
    • Sheryl Albers (R-Reedsburg): Juneau County Circuit Court judgeship;
    • Terry Musser (R-Black River Falls): Funding to waive higher education tuition for veterans;
    • Jeff Wood (R-Chippewa Falls): Funding for biofuels.

    And Charlie Sykes, who tells it like it is when he points out that Rep. Sheryl Albers (R-Reedsburg) was logrolled by the governor’s staff – and that logrolling is indeed illegal!

    And lastly, I’m with liberal-but-thoughtful blogger Seth Zlotocha who yesterday acknowledged the dems have some catch-up to do.

    But since it doesn't look like Huebsch is going to budge, and the fact is he's the GOP's leader in the Assembly, it's time to start looking at what it would mean to drop the hospital assessment and lower the cigarette tax by 50 cents.

    The impact would be on health care initiatives, of course, but the Dems need to ask the LFB for a specific analysis of what would be lost and they need to share that widely with the public.

    This may sound trivial, but it would represent a significant shift in the Dem game plan. So far the Dem emphasis appears to be on the effects of not passing a budget. Not a bad line, but it doesn't quite stand up to the "protect the taxpayers" line coming from the GOP.
    [Seth continues on with interesting strategizing – mostly for consumption by the dems.]

     And lastly, it’s fourth and long, and I too am with the Green Bay Press Gazette: “The onus is on Doyle and the Democrat-controlled Senate to make some concessions to stressed-out taxpayers.”

    Hear hear.

    Catch up, yes. But on rhetoric, not policy. Including other quotes from my post would've made that more clear.
    Yup, I tried to make it clear there was more to your post... JE
