    Overpromised and overspent

“You say a lot of things in campaigns that you never really expect to be called on – you overpromise – but the closer you get to victory, the more weight every word carries.” All Too Human, 1999, George Stephanopoulos, on the Clinton campaign in late 1991.

Our re-elected Governor Doyle has made mountains of claims and a few promises. Promises that aren’t free.

    A few of those promises:

    • Schools will be protected from “deep cuts.”
    • Constitutional limit on property taxes will continue to be opposed.
    • All individual/employee-paid health care premiums will be deductible.
    • Vehicle registration fee will increase only “modestly,” from $55 to $65.
    • Committed to expand the SAGE program (extra-small elementary classrooms).
    • Committed to funding 2/3 of the cost of schools.
    • Will not expand Milwaukee’s school voucher/choice program.
    • Will continue to use the line-item veto to increase state spending.
    • Will expand FamilyCare statewide.
    • Every parent, regardless of income, will have the opportunity to join a state plan with affordable, comprehensive coverage for their kids.
    • Wisconsin will capture 10 percent of the stem cell market, and create 100,000 jobs by 2015.
    • Would lift 9,000 families out of poverty via a Living Wage Tax Credit.
    • Will guarantee 8th grade students with B averages the necessary financial aid for state colleges and universities.

As stated here more than once, fiscal policy is not the governor’s long suit. Governor Doyle continues to claim he has balanced the budget. Once again we say, (this is a recording) – he absolutely has not.

    Promises FoxPolitics.net is looking for:

    • Be truthful. Promises can be very very expensive.
    • Support state budgeting using professional, honest Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP accounting).
    • Do not move money from the transportation fund to use for General Fund spending.
    • Be honest with us about long-term highway needs and how we’re going to fund them.
    • Create a reasonable (just reasonable – all we ask) rainy-day fund.
    • Seriously address the critical challenge of school funding as enrollments shrink.
    • Analyze state programs and identify those that could be eliminated.
    • Support a tax freeze.
    • Control spending increases in technical college budgets; support the election of technical college boards.
    • BALANCE THE BUDGET.

On a completely different note, this memorable quote:
“I am the most blessed person in this country…..Despite some of the things that were said about me and the way I conduct myself, my family and I have served northern Wisconsin with honor, with distinction and with integrity." John Gard, concession speech, Nov. 7, 2006.

    COMMENTS

Jo - you really hit the nail on the head with this article! Great writing. I also like the inclusion of part of Gard's comments in his concession speech. John showed a lot of class in his concession while Kagen showed his conceit as he decided to start his acceptance in the middle of John's concession.
